Tips for Buying Winter Boots

I know you just thought that because I currently live California coast, I am basically disqualified from being able to offer advice on winter boots. But despite my current address, I DO know a thing or two about having an actual winter. Winters with snow and freezing temperatures and even blizzards, although it’s been a while since I’ve experienced that last one. My California experience will come to an end in 2018, and it will be back to normal seasons, winter included, so wearing my Birks all year round just won’t be an option.

So, when it comes to picking winter boots, there is sort of a range of options. Because winter boots includes everything from legit snow boots to anything that is waterproof, is important to know what kind of winter boot you’re looking for.

Once you know what you want – snow boot, fashion boot, super casual boot with fur – my recommendation is to check out what Sorel has to offer. Not only do they make a legit boot, but you might be surprised at all the options they offer.

I actually have owned these Sorel snow boots for a few years, and love them! Clearly it was the black + white that won my heart. And since I already have a snow boot (and a pair of Hunter rain boots that are the best when you’re gonna need to slosh through a grocery story parking lot a few days after a snow), I was looking for more of a fashion boot, but one that could hold up to winter weather. And that’s when the Sorel Lea Wedge literally called my name as I was scrolling through Evereve’s Insta (ps- I legit love their styling!). They’re waterproof, leather, and the sole has a legit tred that will help keep me from slipping. Plus they look like a regular fashion bootie. It’s a bonus that they’re crazy comfortable EVEN being a wedge.

TIP |
The Sorel Lea Wedge run snug around the toes + loose around your heel. I’m comfortable with my heel popping up slightly when I walk (think like flip-flops) and I don’t actually notice it when I’m wearing them. Sizing down eliminated the heel popping, but I wasn’t happy with how tight-fitting the shoes were in my toe area. Plus, wearing a thick sock wouldn’t be an option if I sized down. I ended up with my normal size, 6 1/2.

TIP |
If you aren’t buying boots in store, I ALWAYS recommend buying at least two sizes, to see which one fits better. There is practically nothing worse than spending a chunk of change on boots, only to wear them and wonder if a smaller size would have felt better. There are so many online companies that offer free shipping and returns – just order from them.

I’m wearing the Sorel Lea Wedge in Elk.

Are you a Sorel fan??
