I know most of the days I’m #boymom in all my pictures, but I DO have another girl in the house – Roxann! Roxann is a seven year old Rhodesian Ridgeback, a breed out of Africa bred to hunt lions. She is a powerful, stunning runner – when she wants to run. She has a very lazy but sweet personality and because her fighting weight is around ninety pounds, I’m great with her more laid back persona.

PetSmart is where I have always headed for all things pet related – I even did a puppy class with Roxann when she was just a few months old! I recently made a trip to PetSmart because I wanted to check out all the Purina® Pro Plan® dry dog foods. While I was there, I was also able to grab a much needed bottle of shampoo and conditioner for her too, because PetSmart has all the things!

Santa are you listening to this? Roxann wants to know, because her Christmas gift is in there.

ProPlan Petsmart

Because I was interested in the Purina® Pro Plan® food for Roxann, I tried out the myPLAN Dog & Cat Food Selector on the Purina® Pro Plan® University website first! It is an easy process and really neat to see their recommendation and why they recommend that variety! For Roxann, their recommendation was the Purina® Pro Plan® Bright MindAdult 7+ Turkey & Rice Formula! It has real, high-quality protein, including turkey as the first ingredient and is made without poultry by-product meal, without artificial colors or flavors, and without corn, wheat, or soy. And it has enhanced botanical oils shown to promote alertness and mental sharpness in dogs 7+ within 30 days.

Honestly I was super impressed! That particular variety I’m keeping in the back of my pocket because Roxann is getting up there in age. But, what I was most interested in learning more about, was the new Purina® Pro Plan® Grain Free Dog Foods.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR DOG’S FOOD IS GRAIN FREE, AND IF IT SHOULD BE?

How to know if your pet’s food is grain free? Check the ingredients.

The most common grains found in dog foods are barley, buckwheat, corn, oats, quinoa, and rice, so if you’re trying to avoid those, make sure they’re not listened as ingredients. And while all the ingredient can be found printed on the bag of dog food, Purina® Pro Plan® makes it really easy to search the ingredients in all of their dog and cat foods. All of their products are backed by a team of over 400 Purina scientists, including nutritionists, behaviorists and veterinarians to offer outstanding nutrition. No ingredient is unnecessary—everything is precisely and purposefully selected.

Should your pet’s food be grain free? Research the benefits of grain free dog food.

Here’s the thing, Roxann is not allergic to grains, but allergies aren’t the only reason to avoid or restrict grains! Some of the potential benefits of your dog eating a grain free food, besides containing more protein and animals fats and fewer carbohydrates, making it potentially easier to digest, include:

  • Helps to keep dogs fuller longer resulting in eating less frequently
  • May reduce canine food allergies
  • More energy
  • Fewer and smaller stools
  • Healthier skin
  • Shinier coat
  • Less shedding
  • Better breath
  • Reduced flatulence

The Social Hub was super helpful too with it’s amazing tutorials on ways to spoil your pet and information on the Pro Plan brand!  Now remember, every dog is different; and it is always best to consult your vet when making changes such as a grain free diet. That’s considered research! Roxann, with her struggles of bad breath, flatulence (which is so unladylike of her) and dry skin stands to potentially benefit greatly from a grain free dog food.

Which is why a big bag of Purina® Pro Plan® SAVOR® Grain Free Adult Dog Food is what came home with us! It has real chicken, beef, lamb, or salmon (depending on which variety you choose) as the #1 ingredient in all dry formulas, and features a combination of crunchy kibble and tender shredded pieces for a taste and texture dog love. And it’s offered in a couple of grain free varieties!

Roxann is gorgeous! A few years ago I photographed a Rhodesian for a dance friend of mine. Her boy was a show dog but he was about 2 and still very much a puppy! They are great dogs!

She really is pretty; she gets stopped all the time when she’s out. I love the symmetry in Rhodesians.

Roxy is so beautiful! When it comes to dog food, I don’t put much thought into it. Thanks for the tips.

You know what – I don’t usually either!! Roxann had been on the same food the breeder had been feeding her. BUT, I’ve just gotten *annoyed* lately with some of her quirks; when I found out that grain free might help elevate some of those, I was all over it! It makes sense though. Our bodies respond to what we feed them… my body just LOVES that my diet has been one piece of Halloween candy after another… =)

Your girl is so gorgeous!! My husband loves Rhodesians… I’ve always been a little intimidated by their size, but she sounds wonderful! And you’ve got some great info in here about going grain-free. I’ve actually been wondering about this for our furry guy!

She IS a big girl, but she is just the sweetest! And I LOVE her temperament! And even if grain free isn’t the right fit, it’s neat to see what the MyPlan Tool picks for your pet!!

She is! Anytime we would take her to Bear Creek dog park, she would just get accosted. We had to stop taking her because of all the attention she would get from the other dogs. #girlproblems =)
